Country singer Doug Supernaw has a simple philosophy when it comes to his approach to playing music.

"When you're not the world's greatest singer, you have to reach down through your vocals and sing from your heart," he said in a recent interview.

This isn't to say that Supernaw isn't a talent. The Houston native has managed to cobble together a career through trying circumstances.

Influenced by classic country artists like Gene Watson, Vern Gosdin Keith Whitley and George Jones, Supernaw landed in Nashville in the mid-'80s after playing Texas clubs for a few years. …
