Board Recommends Teacher Training

The Santa Fe Public Schools board, after weighing pros and cons in a study session, voted Dec. 19 to continue block scheduling for the next four years at Capital and Santa Fe high schools.

The measure passed with a provision for increased supply and equipment budgets over the next two years and training for teachers.

Block scheduling requires teachers to condense subjects. When students miss a week, it's like missing two weeks of school on a traditional schedule.

Steve Dilg, former Santa Fe High principal, has said the block scheduling was launched in 1997-98 without adequate preparation for schools and teachers. …
