Viennese fete marks birthday.(Personalities)

Though the New Year is a time to look toward the future, it is also a fitting time to acknowledge the past.

For example, imagine how much Albuquerque has changed since 1934 when Hedwig Bronitsky immigrated to the United States from Vienna, Austria. Albuquerque was a wide spot in the road and European-style entertainment and culture were pretty scant.

But on Saturday, when Ms. Bronitsky celebrated her 90th birthday at the Bernalillo home of her son, Albuquerque physician Dr. Ron Bronitsky, she was treated to a taste of her homeland.

The theme of the party was "A Night in Vienna" in honor of her birthplace. Celebrated Albuquerque mezzo-soprano Kathleen Clawson raised the roof with traditional Viennese songs in a private, pre-dinner concert.

After the concert, 36 close friends and family sat down to a five-course Viennese feast (catered by Artichoke Cafe). …
