3 DWI Checkpoints, Extra Patrols Planned

Albuquerque police will be celebrating New Year's Eve with a first-time-ever marathon of drunken driving checkpoints.

They are expecting it to help net a record number of arrests.

Using statistics compiled from previous New Year's Eves, the Albuquerque Police Department's DWI Unit has pinpointed spots around the city where wrecks took place and at what times those crashes happened. Armed with that information, checkpoints will be at three locations. The first will begin at 6 p.m., and the final checkpoint won't end until at least 3 a.m.

The APD usually has just one checkpoint on any given night, and it typically lasts three or four hours. …
