West's Power Problems Not Likely To Hit Here.

Local power suppliers say the electrical-supply problems in California are not expected to spread to New Mexico.

Electric customers in the nation's most populous state have been experiencing brownouts and much higher electric bills recently due to high demand for power.

The problem has prompted Energy Secretary Bill Richardson to call for price caps and issue an order for power companies throughout the West to sell excess electricity to California.

Officials with power suppliers in the East Mountains and Estancia Valley said those problems should not affect consumers here.

Julie Gray, spokeswoman for Public Service Company of New Mexico, said last week that the company has been selling excess electricity to California customers but will not jeopardize its regular customers. …
