2001 Will Chart Its Own Course.(Opinion)

EDITORIAL

It's been about 30 years since the film "2001: A Space Odyssey" tried to provide a glimpse into the then-distant future. In a few days that future will arrive, but in far different form than portrayed in the classic science-fiction movie.

We're building an international space station, but it's nothing like the film's expansive orbiting installation. Average people are not traveling through the solar system. And computers are everywhere, but people still seem to be controlling the machines rather than vice versa for the moment.

In fact, the world at the dawn of 2001 is not much different than it was when that movie made its debut.

People still work hard to get ahead, meet the challenges and reap the rewards of each day, and get up the next day to do it all over. …
