Crews Mop Up Mess Left by Winter Storm.

Santa Fe road crews still were working around-the-clock Wednesday to clear roads the day after a snowstorm closed government offices, sabotaged motorists and delighted skiers.

A slow-moving storm and low temperatures made this storm especially difficult to clean up after, according to Lawrence Ortiz, director of the Santa Fe Streets and Drainage Maintenance Division.

"It being so cold, it causes (the precipitation) to freeze up before we completely clear the road," said Ortiz. He supervises three daily shifts composed of 29 workers. "We had layers of material sitting out there."

Sunshine and rising temperatures on Wednesday provided some relief for snow plows, as a salt and lava-rock mixture melted stubborn ice and snow. …
