Class field trips are standard fare in education, a way students can see what they've been learning in books and lectures.

But the lucky dozen in Maria Williams' native music and culture class at the University of New Mexico are going a bit far afield this spring: Bethel, Alaska, in the southwestern part of the state.

Williams, an Alaska native, a member of the Tlingit tribe and an ethnomusicologist, earned a doctorate and then a Ford Foundation fellowship studying traditional Alaskan music and dance.

Last year's class on the topic, cross-listed in music and Native American studies departments, made her students yearn for a trip. …
