Tourism isn't the kind of business that succeeds simply on faith in "build it and they will come." In a world where consumers are overwhelmed with choices, communities have to aggressively market themselves to win visitors and reap the financial windfall they bring.

With this in mind, New Mexico's six regional tourism marketing boards met this fall at the annual Governor's Conference on Tourism in Albuquerque to discuss strategies to maximize advertising dollars.

Topics on the table were:

* Revamping the Albuquerque International Sunport visitors center;

* Adding a New Mexico visitors center to the El Paso, Texas, airport and visitor kiosks to airports in Phoenix, Denver and Las Vegas, Nev. …
