State has requests for $15 million

New and expanding companies hoping to get job training funds from the state are now dependent on the good graces of the Legislature.

The popular in-plant training program that reimburses employers for training workers is down to its last $2,987.08 just halfway through the state's fiscal year.

"This month, by virtue of that, we could not entertain (companies') proposals," said Peter Mitchell, chairman of the board and director of the state Economic Development Division.

The program's board has received requests for $15 million from about two dozen companies that want to create about 4,800 jobs 3,300 of them for rural New Mexico, Mitchell said.

The companies' applications will not be accepted until February, when it is hoped the Legislature will provide more money, he said. But how much more, and how much Gov. …
