Serious concussions require proper care, pose serious health risks.(Outdoors & Recreation)

* Injury can occur during virtually any sport, and to amateur and pro athletes alike

A few weeks ago, during a game against the Washington Redskins, longtime Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman was hit by a flying tackle and suffered a concussion that may end his career. It was Aikman's second concussion this season, his fourth in two years and the 10th of his 12-year tenure in the NFL.

So it seems likely the Cowboys star will suffer the same fate as San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young, who retired from football after enduring repeated concussions and receiving strong advice from several doctors.

But severe concussions aren't restricted to professional football or, for that matter, hockey or boxing. They can just as easily occur on junior high and high school playing fields. That's why parents, coaches and athletes alike should be aware of the potential hazards such injuries pose. …
