Tuesday's task: Watch it snow. Wednesday's mission: Figure out a way to dig out of it.

The sun hadn't broken through the morning fog Wednesday before Rowena Metzger and her son, Warren, had locked the pickup into four-wheel drive, dumped a bale of hay in the truck bed, gathered up Warren's 4-year-old daughter, Brina, and headed out through the snow to their cow pastures strewn across Torrance County.

"Cattle, they can withstand a lot of cold but they've gotta eat," Rowena Metzger said as a herd of Maine Anjou, their breath blowing white in the cold, ambled over to meet the truck.

"The grass is covered up by the snow," she said, "so you gotta feed. …
