Congratulations to the 30 new officers of the Albuquerque Police Department, sworn in Friday in graduation ceremonies. They join a proud and competent police force "to serve and protect" our city.

The new officers of the 82nd cadet class boost the number of officers to 869, or 93 percent of APD's authorized strength of 930. Chief Jerry Galvin said two upcoming cadet classes, one next month and another to begin in July, should help APD make progress toward reaching its authorized strength a year from now.

But, with APD's 20-year retirement package, the turnover is steady. Last week's 30 new officers, plus 24 who joined the force last July, were offset by 36 retirements expected this year. …
