Clerk's Deputy May Not Inspire Trust.(Opinion)

Forget the lottery scholarship college freshman Travis Long hit the jackpot, a $33,000-a-year position as the Sandoval County Clerk's deputy.

If it sounds too good to be true, maybe it is. The job pays twice as much as an entry-level clerk's position because there's more than twice as much responsibility. To dispatch that responsibility, it helps to have a lot more than twice as much judgment, preferably based in thorough training and experience on the job or in related work.

The 18-year-old Long does have some experience as a clerk in a convenience store partly owned by his father. Beyond that, he graduated from Valley High School last May, has one semester at the University of New Mexico under his belt and worked in Clerk-elect Victoria Dunlap's campaign. …
