* Garfield Middle School musicians take time to listen, learn

Orchestra students at Garfield Middle School take time off from their violins and violas every Wednesday when school's in session to listen instead to Native American flute music or to share the tunes hummed by their grandparents.

The seventh- and eighth-graders have even penned their own corridos, or musical tributes to the people and events important in their lives.

Melissa Aragon, 14, recently told of the impact of man's first step on the moon in her original poetry set to music from a Beethoven symphony.

The students in Willva Delgado's advanced orchestra class at Garfield get a weekly dose of the rich Indo-Hispanic music traditions of New Mexico. Besides listening to taped music, the budding musicians pull out instruments to practice renditions of Hispanic music ranging from "Las Mananitas" to "La Bamba. …
