Senate Leadership Challenge Ditched

SANTA FE A senator who considered challenging Senate President Pro Tem Manny Aragon for his longtime leadership post said too few others were willing to oppose the powerful Democratic legislator.

"I changed my mind because the votes weren't there and there is no sense in challenging him," Sen. Richard Romero, D-Albuquerque, said in a recent interview.

Aragon, a South Valley Democrat, has held the Senate's top post since 1988. He has repeatedly been re-elected by the chamber's majority Democrats despite frequent controversy over his liberal views and sometimes domineering tactics.

The Senate's 24-member Democratic caucus nominated Aragon to yet another term as president pro tem during a recent closed-door caucus at the Capitol.
