Winter Weather Spurs Increased Need for Blood.(Metro & New Mexico)

Wintry days create a conundrum for blood bank officials: Slippery streets may discourage people from donating, but they also lead to accidents that heighten the need for blood.

"We had four people come in during the first 2 1/2 hours today," Elizabeth Waltman of United Blood Services said Tuesday. "Normally, we would have seen 20."

Blood donations normally decline during the busy holiday season, but the snow that started falling in many parts of the state on Christmas have made things even tougher, she said.

Icy conditions in Roswell were keeping people away from the United Blood Services office there, and snow was discouraging people from showing up to donate in Santa Fe, Waltman said. …
