Full-Day Kindergarten May Be Put on Fast Track.

Parents concerned that New Mexico was moving too slowly to provide full-day kindergarten classes can find some holiday cheer in budget proposals for the coming year.

Competing ideas from a legislative committee, Gov. Gary Johnson and a legislative-sponsored task force call for speeding up plans to put the classes in all schools.

The Legislative Finance Committee proposal would make full-day kindergarten available soonest. Rep. Max Coll, D-Santa Fe, said the committee's plan would pay for full-day classes in every school that is ready in the 2001-2002 school year.

"Getting children prepared for school is good, and I think that that is what kindergarten tends to do," Coll said in an interview Tuesday. …
