Church takes to the street to bring clothing and comfort to homeless and shelterless

Standing on top of an old van borrowed from Grace Outreach Center, an Assemblies of God church in Rio Rancho, Rodney Handy rummages through stacks of clean, donated clothes stored in a neat grid of plastic bins. In a couple of minutes he finds what he needs a pair of dark jeans and size 36 briefs.

"You're going to be styling," Handy calls out cheerfully, tossing the clothes to the homeless man waiting on the pavement. Next, there's the offer of free socks and a coat.

Handy has already given the man a cup of hot coffee from McDonald's and the assurance that God loves him. It's cold out and the man seems to appreciate both.

"I used to be homeless," Handy later confides. "I've been a 'wild hare. …
