Baseball Team Name Belongs in Duke City.(Editorial Page)


Way back in 1706, when Don Francisco Cuervo y Valdes approved New Mexico's third villa the other two were Santa Fe and Santa Cruz he named it San Francisco de Alburquerque (the archaic spelling altered in the intervening years). The name was given to honor Don Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva Enriquez, the duke of Alburquerque and 34th viceroy of New Spain, who lived in the capital, Mexico City.

The duke, however, quickly changed the name to San Felipe de Alburquerque. Not that he favored St. Phillip over St. Francis, but King Philip V of Spain had not yet approved the new villa, and it wouldn't hurt to invoke the king's patron saint before telling him about it. …
