* 'Traps and Canals' at the Coleman Gallery a great holiday diversion

One of the nice things about being a reviewer is being pleasantly surprised by artists who you think you already know something about.

For several years Kay Whitney has been exhibiting in group shows or in less-than-ideal gallery spaces. Her new work at the Coleman Gallery sparkles with intelligence, decent lighting and is well- complemented by paintings by Joyce Shupe that represent a clear statement of intent.

My appreciation for Whitney's sculpture heretofore has been fragmented by seeing it almost one piece at a time. In "Traps and Canals" she selected the interesting premise of a 300-year-old encyclopedia of technological achievements by Diderot. Her inspiration is based on a large section of Diderot's work illustrating a wide variety of hunting and fishing traps. …
