N.M. landscape plays pivotal role in new movie.(Arts & Culture)

*Light, panorama drew filmmakers to the Land of Enchantment

New Mexico provides a stunning backdrop to the new film adaptation of the bestselling Cormac McCarthy novel, "All the Pretty Horses," which opens Monday in theaters across the nation.

Director Billy Bob Thornton's long, loving shots of the mountains, rivers and scrub are as important to the movie as the actors in it, says Henry Thomas, who stars in the movie with Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, Sam Shepard, Bruce Dern and the young Lucas Black.

"The landscape and the geography are a character in this film as much as anybody else," said Thomas in a phone interview. "That's why we came to New Mexico, because of the light and the panorama that are really amazing. …
