Albert Gonzales is retiring, and this time, he really means it.

A decade ago, the longtime Santa Fe attorney and former state legislator announced that he was giving up his law practice.

Despite his eminent intentions, Gonzales didn't stop working.

"People kept seeking me out, so I just kept going," Gonzales said.

But now 88, Gonzales, who lost his sight as a teen-ager in a swimming accident, said retirement not only feels right, it's his only choice.

"I can practice law blind, but not blind and deaf," said Gonzales, whose hearing has slowly started to diminish in recent years.

"I'm so deaf," he curses, "that's why I'm quitting the business. …
