Postal Worker Pitches In To Help With Letters to Santa

No facial hair. No red suit. No tummy that jiggles like a bowl full of Jell-O.

But Linda Modetz is Santa Claus nonetheless, or at least she takes his dictation.

"I try to make it really fun for the kids," she said.

Modetz, the customer service coordinator for the post office in Santa Fe, ends up with some of the letters local children drop in the mailbox to Santa Claus. Because of the post office's state-wide distribution system, most Santa letters don't filter out of the mail until Albuquerque, when address-reading machines fail to recognize "North Pole" and the children's wish lists drop into the dead letter office. …
