Artists plot and coordinate new buildings and decorate them using local craftsmen

Interior designer Jan Bernson opened the Iron Horse Gallery in 1994 to showcase Southwestern arts, crafts and furnishings.

"I had been a designer in Chicago for twenty years and had worked in New Mexico in semi-retirement from the design profession. After opening the gallery I took a course in welding that allowed me to create designs in iron that followed my equestrian interests and also put me in touch with other metal workers and craftspeople," Bernson said in a phone interview.

She explained that when she moved the gallery to a larger space last July she saw an opportunity to go back into the design profession. The back room was transformed into a mockup of a working design studio complete with sketches of interiors, architectural drawings and floor plans.

"We use the back gallery to review and critique work by our artists and artisans and as a way to introduce what we do to our clients," Bernson said during a studio visit.
