School District To Use Only Bottled Water.

The Jemez Valley School District superintendent recently implemented a bottled-water-only policy because of elevated levels of naturally occurring contaminants in the schools' water supply.

But a state Environment Department official says the department first notified the district in a May 1999 letter about elevated arsenic levels.

And a subsequent letter was sent this August notifying the school about elevated fluoride levels, Stephen Wust, program director for the New Mexico Environment Department's Drinking Water Bureau, said Thursday.

Jemez Valley Schools Superintendent Paula Papponi said Thursday she has seen faxes of the letters that were sent, but she never got them. …
