In these secular times, when one does not blink to discover that noted Buddhist author Lama Surya Das was born to Jewish parents in Brooklyn, let us pause for a moment on the eve of Hanukkah, and remember when such a thing would cause an entire community to throw up their hands in unison and pray for the Messiah.

These are the times about which the late Nobel Prize winner Isaac Bashevis Singer writes in his native Yiddish, and it's an extreme pleasure to read Curt Leviant's new translation of his stories, "More Stories From My Father's Court." Part essay, part autobiographical fiction, they are Singer's deceptively simple memories of growing up in a turn of the century Polish shtetl. …
