Palace Portal Vendors Complain of Pollution

The horseless carriage could soon become history at Santa Fe's storied Plaza, at least on Palace Avenue.

Spawned by years of complaints from art vendors and safety advocates, a renewed measure is making its way through City Hall to close off the portion of the street directly in front of the Palace of the Governors to motorized vehicles. Some concerns have been voiced by Indian craftspersons who sell their wares beneath the building's portal, just a few feet from where tour buses, low riders, out-of-state minivans and local sport utility vehicles spew exhaust.

"It's congested, noisy the pollution is bad," said Santa Clara Pueblo potter Merton Sisneros, who also heads the Native American Vendors Program at the Palace. …
