UNM BASKETBALL: A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING

The evening started with a surprise and nearly ended with a shock. But the University of New Mexico men's basketball team (6-1) used a late 17-5 run Thursday night to take a lethargic 68-56 win against Furman (5-4) at the Pit.

The Lobos' already strange week took yet another twist when coach Fran Fraschilla announced prior to the game that senior Wayland White would be suspended for the contest as well as Saturday's game against Mercer. Fraschilla said White met NCAA grade requirements to remain eligible but didn't meet the coach's personal standards.

"I love him; he's one of my favorite people," Fraschilla said of White. "But he's a team leader, and he had to show a little more responsibility."

Said White, "It has nothing to do with being eligible. I'm eligible. He just wasn't happy with my (academic) performance, and I respect that. …
