Districts Protest Money Deferral

Rio Rancho Public Schools could lose four full-time nursing positions due to problems with federal Medicaid reimbursement.

The result would mean part-time nurses at most schools and would require about 20 medically fragile students to be bused to schools that have a full-time nurse, said Maggie Cordova, executive director of special services for the Rio Rancho district.

"It's very discouraging," said Cordova, whose district would have to pay some $160,000 on its own to cover the nurses' salaries.

Rio Rancho has joined with 35 other New Mexico districts while some like Albuquerque Public Schools are working on their own to protest the state's withholding of $6 million in federal Medicaid in the Schools, or MITS, reimbursements over the last year. …
