Group Plans Math, Science Academy

Math and science education won a boost in the form of $1.18 million in federal money for teacher education.

The University of New Mexico's College of Education will use the money, sponsored by Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., to create a Math and Science Teacher Academy.

The main goal is to increase the ability of public school teachers in New Mexico to offer high-quality math and science education.

The academy would educate future teachers at the College of Education and offer advanced professional development workshops for teachers across the state.

Planning for improvements in the education of future teachers will begin in the spring and will be introduced in the fall, said Jeff Hale, director of development for the education college. …
