But Battles' Loss Hurts in Middle

The grand debut has been tainted by an unceremonious departure, but the University of New Mexico men's basketball team plans to quickly put that in the past for tonight's meeting with Furman.

The Lobos (5-1), who haven't played in two weeks, were hoping to use this evening as Ruben Douglas' "coming out" party. The 6-foot, 4-inch transfer from the University of Arizona finally becomes eligible tonight.

But the anticipation of Douglas' return was clouded by Tuesday's events junior center Malcolm Battles was kicked off the team after being arrested for allegedly beating and choking his live-in girlfriend late Monday night.

Now, instead of adding one player, the Lobos break even. Maybe.

In sophomore Douglas, New Mexico gets a guy who will probably be its best all-around player a sensational shooter with excellent quickness and great defensive abilities. …
