Plan Would Clear Neighborhood Trees

SANTA FE Gov. Gary Johnson on Wednesday unveiled a strategic plan to protect 20 New Mexico residential areas identified for the first time as the most vulnerable to wildfires.

The governor's plan is in response to a devastating fire season this year, including the destruction of hundreds of Los Alamos homes during the Cerro Grande Fire.

"Clearly, the year 2000 surpassed past fire seasons in terms of human suffering, property loss, environmental damage and destruction of our natural resources," Johnson said at a news conference at the Capitol.

Johnson stressed the need to take preventive measures to avoid future fire disasters. …
