Feds Would Oversee Project

SANTA FE Media mogul Ted Turner aims to add gray wolf to the list of endangered species running over his 580,000-acre Vermejo Park Ranch in northern New Mexico.

Mike Phillips, head of the Turner Endangered Species Fund, said this week the federal government is free to use Turner's sprawling Colfax County ranch as wolf habitat if the agency ever decides to seed the southern Rocky Mountains with gray wolves.

The government could release wolves on the property and consider the land undisputed wolf habitat much like it uses public land in any efforts to introduce gray wolves to the region, he said. …
