Ram Wrestlers Leave State, Come Back Stronger.(Sports)

The Rio Rancho High School wrestling program has, in the first month of the season, discovered it is one of the best teams in the Southwest.

The Rams hauled themselves to Grand Junction, Colo., last weekend, finishing an impressive sixth out of 34 teams.

The Rams visited Perry, Okla., for another huge meet the week before that and ended up seventh.

And to open its schedule, Rio Rancho was the host to a 21-team meet that attracted teams from seven states. The Rams were fourth.

Now what Rio Rancho and first-year head coach Dennis Friedland are anxious to find out is where the Rams match up with the rest of New Mexico, because they haven't spent much time here.

When the clock strikes 2001, they should get some answers.

"It's good for the kids, but you need some hometown stuff to get some success as well," said Friedland of the travel. …
