Jewish Festival Commemorates Miracle of Hanukkah.

The Jewish festival of Hanukkah - which begins tonight at sundown - once was considered a minor celebration because the historic event was post-biblical.

But in recent times, the annual eight-day observance has become an important religious holiday.

Hanukkah, which means dedication in Hebrew, is known as the Jewish Festival of Lights.

The festival recalls how Judah and the Maccabees rebelled against Syrian rule, including the outlawing of many Jewish practices and placing of idols in their temple, more than 2,100 years ago.
