Hearing OKs Claim For Unemployment

Former Mountainair police officer Juan Ibarra was recently awarded unemployment compensation benefits by a New Mexico Department of Labor appeals tribunal in Albuquerque.

Ibarra worked as a police officer for Mountainair from November 1999 through August 2000.

Ibarra had been denied compensation by a claims examiner in September on the grounds that he left employment "voluntarily without good cause connected with the employment" after Mountainair Mayor John Romero contested his application. His appeal was heard Oct. 31 by hearing officer Gerard Mondragon.

Mondragon reversed the determination of the claims examiner and determined that Ibarra left the job "voluntarily for good cause connected with the work. …
