Felonies Could Extend Jail Term

Two inmates who nearly escaped from the Torrance County Detention Facility in Estancia on Oct. 20 have each been charged with two felony counts.

Lametrius Lawson, 33, and Michael Thomas, 28, were charged Dec. 12 with escape from a penitentiary and conspiracy to commit escape, according to documents filed in Magistrate Court in Moriarty.

Escape from a penitentiary is a second-degree felony punishable by up to nine years in prison. Conspiracy to commit escape is a fourth-degree felony punishable by up to 18 months in prison.

Lawson and Thomas are each serving about 20 years in prison for crimes ranging from burglary to homicide, said State Police Patrolman Mike Phillabaum. …
