The tradition of placing an evergreen tree inside the house to celebrate Christmas dates back 500 years, according to the Dec. 15 newsletter put out by Santa Fe Greenhouses.

By now you've probably already made your choice a plastic tree, a fresh-cut tree or a living tree to be planted outside after the holidays. Many people say they choose a plastic tree because they feel guilty buying a real tree or cutting one from the forest.

But, according to both the newsletter and state urban forester George Duda, an artificial tree isn't necessarily an environmentally sound choice. …
