Man Awaited Trial On Murder Charges

Investigators have ruled the hanging death of a Santa Fe County Jail inmate awaiting trial for murder a suicide.

Ricky Roybal, 34, of Rio Arriba County, hanged himself with a bedsheet sometime after 5:17 p.m. Thursday in his cell, Santa Fe County sheriff's Detective Martin Rivera said.

Roybal, a previously convicted killer, was indicted in March in a gruesome slaying of convicted Chimayo drug dealer Nicky Nelson Cordova, whose throat was slit and head beaten with a barbell in September 1999. Authorities at the time considered Cordova's killing a robbery. His wallet was missing and his pockets emptied. …
