Hanks Salvages Season for Box Office.

It's not really much of a revelation that the Best Actor Oscar race officially has heated up with the arrival of Tom Hanks' quasi-annual December acting feast.

Hanks and December go together like sleighs and reindeer, a sublime and cozy fit.

It was "You've Got Mail" two years ago for Hanks, "The Green Mile" last year. Now comes the soulful, magnificent "Cast Away," an odd but symbolic entry in what has been an otherwise horrible movie year for mainstream Hollywood.

The irony really is thick, when you think about it. "Cast Away," a film about a man fighting for his survival while yearning for rescue from a deserted island, somehow manages just in time to sail into view to partially salvage and yes, even rescue a savage big-studio year. …
