* Contest honors two entrants with evening concert performance and improvisational workshop

20th Century Unlimited knows how to turn disappointment into good fortune.

The Santa Fe-based concert series, which is devoted to commissioning and performing contemporary music, held a statewide competition for composers 18 and younger earlier this year.

But only two youngsters 11-year-olds Erin Hedemann and Aaron Skolnik of Albuquerque submitted compositions.

Some disappointment for the series sponsors.

"The original idea was to have a whole evening's program of New Mexico young composers' music. This was the inaugural effort so I wasn't surprised that we got a small response," said Jamie Allen, education director of 20th Century Unlimited.

But Allen flipped disappointment 180 degrees, putting Erin and Aaron into the lap of delight. …
