Six Make Bids For 7th District Judgeship.


Six people, including two former 7th Judicial District top prosecutors, have applied for the vacancy created by the Nov. 30 death of state District Judge Neil P. Mertz.

Mertz, a Democrat who was appointed to the bench in February 1996 by Gov. Gary Johnson, was 55 when he died of a heart attack.

The 7th District is comprised of Torrance, Socorro, Sierra and Catron counties.

Applying for his job are Ron P. Lopez, the incumbent district attorney who lost in the general election to Republican Clint Wellborn. He is now a deputy district attorney in Valencia County. …
