Tent Rocks On Way To Full Protection.

Things look auspicious for the oddball rock formations known as Tent Rocks.

Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt last week paid a visit to the area near Cochiti Pueblo in the southeastern foothills of the Jemez Mountains. Babbitt seemed enchanted by the wind- and water-sculpted rock and declared himself "more enthusiastic with each passing hour" about officially recommending it for national-monument status.

Meanwhile, back in Washington, outgoing President Clinton is in full legacy mode and inclined to memorialize the rocks for ages.

No money is required for acquisition, since the 5,400 acres already are within the domain of the Bureau of Land Management. …
