* Veteran skier, others surprised by avalanche on expert trail Saturday morning

A veteran skier caught in a freakish avalanche at Taos Ski Valley this weekend is recovering at home and hopes to be back on his boards before the season's end, according to hospital and ski valley representatives.

Jim Lee, director of ski patrol at Taos Ski Valley, was skiing Longhorn, a long, double-black diamond expert trail, around 10:30 a.m. Saturday when the slope suddenly gave way beneath him, said Chris Stagg, vice president of marketing for Taos Ski Valley Corp. and mayor of the ski village.

Lee was swept up in two to three feet of snow in an avalanche about 200 feet across that traveled approximately 300 yards. …
