After going to court over the cell-phone tower that tops La Bajada, the Santa Fe County's lame-duck commission last week rushed to approve an even taller tower on the county's northern edge.

The two actions are consistent and disturbing.

In the La Bajada case, commissioners claim they went to court only because the tower owners didn't ask them for a variance. The county code sets a 24-foot limit on structures, and the tower is 150 feet tall.

If the La Bajada tower owners had asked for a variance, it now appears the commission would happily have given them one. The commission certainly lost no time approving last week's variance request from Commissioner Javier Gonzales' two brothers for a 198-foot tower in Arroyo Seco. …
