Student-athlete misconduct, Lobos men's basketball coach Fran Fraschilla said Tuesday, is a national epidemic and not just a recurring local infection. He's right.

But when Fraschilla brought Malcolm Battles to Albuquerque, perhaps he forgot what they say about an ounce of prevention.

Tuesday, the Albuquerque Police Department issued a warrant for the arrest of Battles, UNM's best inside player. The 21-year-old junior-college transfer was accused of assaulting his girlfriend and holding her against her will in the presence of her 10-month-old child.

Fraschilla, while emphasizing he was making no judgment on guilt or innocence, quickly dismissed Battles from the team. …
