Santa Fe Symphony and Chorus perform rarely heard 'L'Enfance'.(Entertainment)

With a "Messiah" performance out of the way in November, the Santa Fe Symphony and Chorus turned to Berlioz's rarely heard oratorio, "L'Enfance du Christ" (The Birth of Christ), on Sunday in the Sweeney Center. Music director and conductor Steven Smith speculated that this concert may have been the first professional presentation of the work in New Mexico.

Certainly, Smith and his musicians deserve much credit for providing the opportunity to hear the oratorio, a highly original composition in this highly original composer's output. It arose in part out of Berlioz's fascination with the musical past, or, more accurately, his particular take on what that past might be. …
