SANTA FE Gov. Gary Johnson on Tuesday criticized the cost of a legislative spending plan while outlining what he portrayed as his less costly plan to increase state spending by $250 million.

However, Rep. Max Coll, D-Santa Fe, vice chairman of the Legislative Finance Committee, said the Republican governor's spending plan is as large as the committee's if Johnson's proposed tax cut is accounted for.

Letting taxpayers keep some of their money, or sending it back to them, also would take a bite out of state revenues, Coll noted.
