Respected Defense Lawyer Ron Koch Dies at 49 of Cancer.(Obituary)

Prominent Albuquerque defense attorney Ron Koch, who was respected by judges as well as prosecutors, died Tuesday afternoon at home of lymphoma, a form of cancer. He was 49.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Spanish-Fruit Avenue Baptist Church, 812 Fruit NW.

Koch (pronounced Coke), who was 6-foot and more than 200 pounds, was a big, barrel-chested lawyer who people felt resembled Raymond Burr, who played attorney Perry Mason on television.

Koch once told the Journal:

"The system can be extremely oppressive and overbearing, and if you don't have a defense lawyer to step in front of the machine, it's easy to run over the individual citizen. …
